ENOLA, PENNSYLVANIA

On New Year's Day, we were invited by Rachel and Jack to share pork and sauerkraut, the traditional New Year's meal, at their place in Enola. We've had that meal on New Year's as long as I can remember, so we were delighted to be included in this ritual.

When we arrived, Susanne gave Rachel photos of the grandchildren that were sent for her.

Do you want to see what we had to eat? Here's the pork and sauerkraut. Doesn't it just look lucky? I've heard that in some places, a coin is placed in the pot, and that will bring wealth, too!

Mashed potatoes are needed as base for the sauerkraut.

Giant dinner rolls were light and flaky and tasted great with butter.

After dinner, the final baked treats of the season were passed around.

Jack surveys the selection.

Along with coffee, the cookies and candies -- with good conversation and laughter -- brought an end to the New Year's celebration.
